Wax House Illustration

For my second year of Fine Art A Level I looked at ways of illustration. Here is the images I created while experimenting with photography as a from of illustration.

I wrote out a large part of the first/second chapter of Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll onto a sheet of clear plastic.

I then photographed a wax house that I had created with inspiration from the book. I placed the sheet over the lens and then underneath the house. Both give different effects, I prefer the writing underneath the house but for the purpose of an illustration having the writing on top works best.

I made the house out of another clear sheet of plastic which I cut into a template, scored the edges and glued with PVA which dries transparent .

I covered and sealed the house in clear wax. Wax is something I have experimented with quite a lot and have made many other houses with. I find wax easy to work with and suitable for what I wanted to achieve.

I wanted to use light and the shapes of the house when cast as a shadow. It gives a very ghostly and beautifully simple visual image that hopefully allows the viewer, as the reader does, to interpret it as they wish.
